"On March 17, 1980, Mount St. Helens exploded in Washington state. This picture was taken by Richard Lasher. He decided he'd take a look at the mountain once again before it blew, so he drove up to see the mountain. While driving, the mountain exploded.

He raced the car out of there so fast he damaged the bike he was towing. And when the car choked out by the ashes and gas from the eruption he was able to get out of there using his damaged bike. It is possible that he could have survived by camping out in his car where it died but that is just speculation. Having the bike with him certainly helped him survive."
